Sultana Hakim

Sultana Haukim‘s Diary of a Dead Tree explores nature’s entropy. She found a dead tree standing like a sculpture in the forest near a stream. The symbolic wrapping of the tree in plastic and bubble-wrap conjures up images of art in a warehouse or a gallery. The difference is that here, the wrapped tree becomes an icon of nature’s cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth in a warehouse of life, living nature’s gallery. Adaptable, challenging, and conjuring up notions of “conservation, protection, and how we view “value” in contemporary society, Haukim’s artwork challenges us to reconsider what “value” truly is, when we look at it from a long term, inter-generational perspective. Notebooks attached to the trees, enable visitors to add their personal comments to this nature diary. The comments, what people feel or see, adds a social intervention “layer” to Sultana Haukim’s immense “tree presence” in the heart of these woods. A once dead tree is transformed and brought back to life as art.

Sultana Haukim(スルタナ・ホーキム)は
